Virtual Private Server or Virtual Dedicated Server

September 9th, 2007

When partitioning is done in a physical server computer into multiple servers such that each has capabilities of running on its own dedicated machine, then each one is called a Virtual Private Server (VPS), sometimes called Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS). A full-fledged operating system as the user wants to run on it can be installed, and each server can be independently rebooted. Virtualization software and technologies for other architectures are needed to achieve this partitioning.

Virtualization can be done both by hardware method and software method. In hardware method the main system is partitioned physically to create the virtual servers. However, these are more secure. In software method, all the servers share the same kernel and resources and it has many benefits in a web hosting environment because of quota incrementing and decrementing in real time with no need to restart the node.

If you are limited to tools that are auto hosted by your hosting provider, then you can think of hosting on Virtual Servers

Here you can install your own operating system, experiment with different softwares, Virtual private servers are also sometimes employed as honeypots, allowing a machine to deliberately run software with known security flaws without endangering the rest of the server. Create clusters of Virtual Servers for testing. Custom virtual servers are available with full root access to install the latest open source photo gallery software, blogging tools, community platforms, mail servers.

But you will have to select some good VPS provider. There are so many Dedicated Virtual Server Plans

Virtual dedicated servers are available at reasonable price starting from 30$/mo and higher, but actually it cuts your IT overhead cost and of course, it is profitable to host on VPS or VDS than to do so on shared hosting or maintaining individual physical servers.
